When Should You Call Your Pharmacist?

Your pharmacist isn’t just someone who hands you a paper bag with your medications — they’re a trusted part of your healthcare team. In fact, there are several everyday situations where picking up the phone and calling your pharmacist is the smartest move you can make.

At CCH Pharmacy, our pharmacists are here to answer your questions, help you avoid risks, and make sure your medications are working as they should.

Here are a few good times to call:

1. You’re starting a new prescription

If you’ve been prescribed something new and aren’t sure how it will affect your current meds, your pharmacist can explain what to expect, when to take it, and what side effects to watch for.

“Our pharmacists can flag potential issues before they become a problem,” said Ericka Andrus, PharmD, RPh, Pharmacist in Charge. “We work closely with the prescribing provider, so patients get answers and peace of mind quickly.”

2. You forgot a dose (or took too much)

It happens — you miss a dose, or you can’t remember if you took one. Your pharmacist can tell you what to do next, safely.

3. You’re having side effects

Whether it’s a rash, upset stomach, or dizziness, your pharmacist can help you determine if what you're experiencing is normal or if you need to contact your provider right away.

4. You’re taking over-the-counter medications too

Some vitamins, supplements, and OTC meds can interact with prescriptions. A quick call to your pharmacist can help avoid conflicts and keep you safe.

5. You’re managing multiple medications

If you’re taking several prescriptions — especially if prescribed by different doctors — your pharmacist can review your list and look for interactions or duplications.

6. You’re not sure how to take something

Morning or night? With food or without? Cut in half or not at all? Your pharmacist has the answers — and would rather you ask than guess.

“Patients sometimes hesitate to call with medication questions, but they shouldn’t,” said Andrus. “That’s exactly what we’re here for — to be a resource, not just a dispenser.”
